Today I isolated approximately 5 grams of orange oil from 130 grams of orange peels. The set up pictured works nice because the flask containing the peels has a drain. There is quite a bit of condensation that occurs during this process but it still worked nicely.

I don’t have a proper, and very expensive, steam distillation apparatus specifically for essential oils. Most organic glassware works fine. The problem with steam distillation is preventing condensation in the chamber containing the extraction material…. too much condensation and your steam distillation will turn into a hydro distillation, resulting in a much lower yield oil. The foil helps prevent condensation but isn’t perfect
