Atom transfer radical polymerization ( 2 ) is a form of both chain growth and radical polymerization wherein the polymerization reaction is carried out through the generation of radicals via electron transfer and the monomers are added one by one, or in small groups at a time, allowing for good control over chain length. These reactions typically use an alkyl halide as the initiator and transition metal complexes (often copper or iron) as the catalysts. ATRP is known for being relatively simple and inexpensive and can be used for a wide variety of polymers
